- Moses Austin (1761-1821). American Merchant, Miner, Founder of the American
Lead Industry, Pioneer, and the Founder of Texas. Austin was
the first American to obtain a grant from Spanish Texas for the
formation of a colony. The colonists, 300 Catholic families from
the Louisiana Territory settled on land that would eventually
become Austin, Texas. The grant was approved only three months
before his death. His son, Stephen F. Austin, took up 'the Texas
venture' and carried out the settlement.

- Exceptionally Rare Autograph Letter
Signed, one page, approximately
8 in. by 8 in., from Mine au Breton, Louisiana, District of St.
Louis (present day Potosi, Missouri), dated November 11, 1809.
Dealing with financial matter relating to his mine, he writes
to a Mr. Perkins.

- "I think some mistake must have
taken place on the Execution against
his note to me was
Doll 157.58 your
calls for 154.42. I have received on a/c
of which you may place his
debt leaving me due 154.42 The
above sum
is all I am to give to his Cm. On the Execution-
Moses Austin."

scarce; it is generally accepted that only 25-30 signed documents
or letters by him are known to exist. Boldly written and in fine
