SUMMARY:THIS OFFERING CONSISTS OF 2 ITEMS. ONE IS A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH OF CHARLES BEST AND THE OTHER IS A SIGNATURE ON A CARD OF JAMES COLLIP. BOTH OF THESE INDIVIDUAL WERE IMPORTANT IN THE DISCOVERY OF INSULIN.
Charles Best (1899-1978) a research scientist. Together Banting and Best showed that dogs could be kept alive after their pancreas was removed by giving them pancreatic extracts. This exciting discovery led to the hiring of a chemist James Collip and , together, the team working with Eli Lilly Corporation went on to develop injectable insulin as a treatment for diabetes. The work was carried out primarily by Banting, Best and James Colip in the labratory of Macleod who in fact was on sabbatical while much of the work was being done.In 1923 Banting and Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for the discovery of insulin. The Nobel Committee ignored Best which incensed Banting so much he shared the Nobel Prize money with Best and Macleod shared his prize money with Collip. The clear judgment of history is that Banting, Best and Colip should have been awarded the Nobel Prize and not, under any circumstances, should any part iof the prize have gone to Macleod..There seems to be little doubt that Best was the second most important part of the research team and his not being awarded the Nobel is another example of Nobel Injustice. Best went on to live a long life and succeeded Macleod as Head of Physiology at The University of Toronto which in a sense was his prize. Banting, on the other hand, died relatively young in that he was killed in a plane crash in 1942 while serving his country in war.His premature death is one reason his autograph is so rare.We have never sen another autograph of James Colip and have never seen one of Macleod. We even tried without success to track down Macleod's autograph in Toronto without result. This offering is a ink pen signature of James Collip on a 3 in x 5 in card and also a glossy 3 in x 4 in B&W head and shoulders photograph of Charles Best signed Charles H. Best. The Collip signature is bold but the Best signature was signed on the dark part of the image but can be seen with closer viewing. Both the photograph and the card are in excellent condition.
