SUMMARY: This offering is a signed iconic photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima signed by John Bradley one of the flag raisers.
John H. Bradley . One of the five servicemen who survived the flag raising on Iwo Jima. This is probably the most famous single photograph of all time.It was taken entirely by chance by the Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The photograph was actually not the first flag raising. It was felt that a second flag needed to be raised after the capture of Mount Surabachi because the first one was not large enough. The second flag or the flag in this photgraph actually came originally from a ship that was damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor.Of the six men depicted in the picture, three (Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block, and Michael Strank) did not survive the battle; the three survivors (John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, and Ira Hayes) became instant celebrities upon the publication of the photo. The picture was later used by Felix de Weldon to sculpt the USMC War Memorial that depicts this flag raising and which is located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery just outside Washington, D.C. The offering is an 8 in x 10 in B&W photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima and that i signed and inscribed by John Bradley in blue ball point pen.N.P., N.D. BUT CIRCA MID-1980'S. Bradley's son wrote the book Flags of Our Fathers which is a great description of the battle for Iwo Jima and his father's role therein. There is a movie of the same name that was directed by Clint Eastwood which was released last year. ![]() Price:$695.00 The item will be come with a letter of provenance as to their origin, history and authenticity.
