John Brown (1800-1859). Legendary Fanatical Abolitionist whose radicalism and extremism during the late 1850s personified the origins of the American Civil War, from 'Bleeding Kansas,' the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre, to the raid on Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now, West Virginia) and whose defeat, trial, and execution there helped set the stage for the U.S. Civil War. Hanged for the attack on Harper's Ferry on December 2, 1859. A Very Rare Signature with Inscription, "Your Affectionate Father John Brown", clipped from a letter to his daughter, Ruth Brown Thompson, measuring 3.75 in. by 1 in., no date or place (but circa late 1850s). Brown's signature is tipped to the bottom of an Autograph Letter Signed by Frederick Brown, John Brown's brother, dated September 27, 1872, complying for an autograph request to a collector named, ironically, John J. Brown, Jr. Signature shows soiling and stain from mounting to sheet, touching the "n" in Brown; does not distract from the quality and historicity of the piece. $old. ![]() |
