Herman Wouk (1915-). The Caine Mutiny is one of the classic American novels and has been popularized by the fact that it was the basis for both a Broadway play and a superb movie starring Van Johnson, Humphrey Bogart and Fred MacMurray. The novel was in fact based on Wouk's experiences in the US Navy during WW II during which he served in the Pacific on a ship not unlike the Caine. This novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and it was written just as Wouk was about to abandon his literary career. This particular version of the book is characterized by the beautiful illustrations of the artist Lawrence Beall Smith one of which is illustrated and which shows captain Queeg on trial.
