He was the leader of Communist Romania from 1965 until shortly before his execution in 1989.He rose steadily through the communist ranks and became absolute ruler of his country along with his wife In 1978 Ion Mihai Pacepa, a senior member of the Romanian political police (Securitate), defected to the United States.
