![]() Chiang Kai-shek ( 1887 1975). Chaing was a major WW II leader in China. he first assumed paower following the death of Sun Yat-sen in 1928. He was supported as a major leader by the allies during WWII since he was perceived as an inturment to fight the Japanese. He attended the 1943 Cairo conference as a member of 'The Big Four.' After the war, Chiang attempted to eradicate the Chinese Communists but ultimately failed, forcing his government to retreat to Taiwan, where he continued serving as the President of the Republic of China and Director-General of the KMT for the remainder of his life.The story of chaing and how the communists took over China remains very controversial history and the whole debacle sullied the reputations of many prominent Americans including George Marshall.
