Harvey Williams Cushing (1869-
1939). Cushing
was an American neurosurgeon and a pioneer of brain surgery.
He is widely regarded as one of the greatest neurosurgeons of
the 20th century.He was educated at Yale, Harvard Medical School
and had his internship in surgery at the Mass General. He later
studied with the great surgeon at Hopkins William Halstead.
He held faculty positions at
Johns Hopkins and at Harvard and Yale Schools of Medicine.Among
his professional achievements were:1-He considerably improved
the survival of patients after difficult brain operations for
intracranial tumors;2- he used x-rays to diagnose brain tumors;
and 3-he used electrical stimuli for study and mapping of the
human sensory cortex. In addition to his technical excellence
he was a masterful mentor and teacher and writer. He won the
Pulitzer Prize for his biography of another great Sir William
Osler, M.D.
This offering is a Typed letter
signed Harvey Cushing in black fountain pen ink on the engraved
New Haven Hospital, Private Pavilion, New Haven, Connecticut
letterhead, February 8, 1934. 5.5 in x 8 in.1 page (recto only).Extra
Fine.The letter is written to a future Nobel Laureate George
Minot and it mentions another Nobel winner William Murphy in
the body of the letter. Reads in part:
"--A pleasant glimpse of
Bill Murphy this morning, down here on consultation with a small
boy who occupies a room just opposite mine, has reminded me of
your Christmas card and its friendly message --I am glad to say
that I seem to be on the mend and shall hope to be out and kicking
again before long--"
Cushing was a chain smoker and
had various ailments that caused him to retire at age 60 from
Harvard and he returned to Yale where he spent his waning years
not doing surgery but working on various projects such as the
Yale Medical School Library.
