Stephen Decatur, Sr.(1752-1808)
American Naval Hero
Scarce Document Signed

Stephen Decatur, Sr. (1752-1808). American Naval Officer. One of the first American Navy's commodores.

Steven Decatur, Sr. was one of the first commanders in the fledgling United States Navy. His first ship was the Delaware which distinguished itself in naval engagements along side the frigate United States in the Quasi War (198-1800) a war so named because it was in a sense an undeclared war between France and the United States. The hostilities between the 2 countries came about because the US Congress declared our debt to France for money lent during The Revolutionary War to be null and void since said debt was due the monarchy which was destroyed during the French revolution and not the post revolution government of France. Not in fact our finest hour.

Steven Decatur, Sr. was the father of Steven Decatur, Jr. who became a true national hero and distingued himself in the War of 1812 and the Tripoli campaign.
