Robert J. Donovan. This book resulted only after extensive research both in The United States and in Japan which involved 30,000 miles of travel. This book of course details the heroics of JFK as a young naval officer in command of a PT boat in WW II.This book was made into a movie starring Cliff Robertson as JFK. There are some aspects of this story that have been misrepresented to the American public by the JFK spin machine. First, the back injury from which JFK suffered from his entire adult life was not the result of an injury sustained during this time period but, rather, it occurred when he fell hard to the ground after his father's chauffeur rushed up to embrace him following a Harvard JV football game. Second, it has been alleged, as documented in Nigel's JFK Reckless Youth, that Kennedy and his crew were actually asleep at their posts which is why the Jap destroyer was able to ram them causing their boat to sink. Apparently the Navy was ready to cashier Kennedy for negligence but James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, intervened :Forrestal was friend of the father Joe Kennedy. After the fact, however, JFK did perform like a true hero and for that he received due credit.
