George III (George William Frederick; 4 June 1738[2] – 29 January 1820 [N.S.]) was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 25 October 1760 until the union of these two countries on 1 January 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death. George III's long reign was marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms, much of the rest of Europe, and places further afield in Africa, the Americas and Asia. Early in his reign, Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War, becoming the dominant European power in North America and India. However, many of its American colonies were soon lost in the American Revolutionary War.A series of wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France, over a twenty-year period, finally concluded in the defeat of Napoleon in 1815.

This offering is an ALS, George R to his favorite son Frederick Duke of York, Queens House, March 1st, 1793.1p. in quattro, The letter which was written during the ill-fated British foray into the low countries which was commanded by the Duke of York and which reads in part-----"this morning I had the satisfaction of receiving your letter of the 27th---I am apprehensive you will have great occasion to muster up ---the patience to combat--fears of the Dutch--if they do not exert themselves this can be of little avail--I can not believe the French commander can advance so precipitously--". Goes on the imply Duke of York should flood the country to impede the French and allow the Hanoverians time to be able assist in the fight.

The Duke of York initially had some failures as a military commander but eventually is credited with reorganizing the British Army so that the resulting improvement in its fighting ability led to the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo.
