Charles Hamilton, Jr.(1914-1996).
'Charlie' Hamilton was
truly a legendary figure in the world of autographs and manuscripts. He
obtained his first autograph from Rudyard Kipling when he was
12 years old by enclosing a dime in his letter requesting Kipling's
signature and by indicating to Kipling that the dime was his
allowance for taking out the ashes.Kipling was famous for rejecting
autograph requests. That experience ignited a passion that animated
the rest of Hamilton's life.Hamilton wrote 17 books, mostly about
autographs and how to authenticate them. He was notorious for
exposing forgers and scanms such as the bogus ' Hitler Diaries.'
He became the definitive expert on handwriting, autograph authentication
and he also became an auctioneer.Hamilton is often referred to
metaphorically as the 'Babe Ruth' of autographs.
