Reinhard Hardegen (1913- ).Hardegen was one of Germany's most important U-boat commandres. His two commands were of U 147 and U 123.Hardegen transferred from the air arm of the Kriegsmarine to the U-Boat service in 1939.During the course of several patrols including ones of the East Coast of the United States Hardegen's boats sunk 22 ships (115,656 tons), remarkable record. This made him one of Germany's top U-Boat.

U-boat is the anglicization of the German word U-Boot (help·info), itself an abbreviation of Unterseeboot (undersea boat). The primary targets of the U-boat campaigns in both world wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from Canada and the United States to Europe. The distinction between U-boat and submarine is common in English-language usage (where "U-Boat" is used to refer exclusively to the German naval submarines of the First and Second World Wars) but unknown in German, in which the term U-Boot refers to any submarine.

Hardegen had severe physical; problems related to a car accident but continued to serve although he was technically unfit to do so.It seems that the orders to take him out of active service never caught up with him. He eventually ended up in a desk job and was captured by the British but returned to civilian life and prospered in business for many years after the war.

The offering is an 8 in x 10 in B&W photograph signed as Reinhard Hardegen and hardegen has noted his two commands:U-147 and U-123. The signature is in fountain pen ink and is clear and very bold.
