Adolph Hitler (1889-1945 )and Rudolph Hess (1894-1987). This post card was sent from (after) the Birthday Celebration of Adolph Hitler as per the message from the sender (Trude) and it is postmarked on day of Hitler's birth April 20th (4/20/38). The recipient of the Post Card was Seraphine Jaeger who worked at the National Socialist Youth Movement where she was an author in the Propaganda Ministry. The fact that Jaeger was a teacher illustrates that the Nazis recruited from all walks of life in Germany including teachers. The post card reads as follows:

My lovely (dearest) Seraphine,
From the birthday celebration for the Fuhrer
I send you many best wishes.
How is your new position working out for
your career? Do you think of returning to
teaching or will you stay in your new position.
Let me hear from you soon.
Your best wishes were forwarded to Fritz
When will you be in the area again. Let me hear from you then.
Your friend Trude
Addressed to:
Seraphine Jaeger
Press/Propaganda Ministry (National Socialist Youth Movement)

The card measures 3.5 in x 5.5 in and there is some bumping of one corner and some minor emulsion imperfections and one small crese on the right none of which affect the signatures or the overall appearance of the card.

The recipient had the card signed one month later and Hitler signed :Adolph Hitler May 20, 1938, n.p. and Rudolph Hess signed RHess, 1938, n.p. The assumptioin is that Hess found no need to put Month and day on his signature since Hitler had already done that. At this point Hess was Deputy Fuhrer.

1938 was a momentous year in the life of Adolph Hitler, Europe and the world. On 12 March 1938, Hitler pressured Austria into unification with Germany (the Anschluss) and made a triumphal entry into Vienna on March 14. Next, he intensified a crisis over the German-speaking Sudetenland districts of Czechoslovakia. This led to the Munich Agreement with neville Chamberlain of September 1938, which authorized the annexation and immediate military occupation of these districts by Germany. As a result of the summit, Hitler was TIME magazine's 'Man of the Year' for 1938. British prime minister Neville Chamberlain hailed this agreement as "Peace in our time", but by giving way to Hitler's military demands Britain and France also left Czechoslovakia to Hitler's mercy. So in 1938, the year of this post card, Hitler and Nazi Germany were gathering the momentum that would caryy them and the woprld into the maelstreom of World War II, the greatest military conflict in human history.

It is seldom that one finds Hitler material with this kind of provenance and associations. This card can be traced back to a German relative of the same name who was close to Hitler and was a Gauleiter in Germany. He had a collection of several historic artifacts from the Nazi era some of which we will be offering for sale.

A certified opinion as to the authenticity of this item will accompany any purchase.

Needless to say, this listing is not to be misconstrued as an endorsement or glorification of Adolph Hitler or his policies. Hitler was a major leader of an important country and, at one time, he was one of the most powerful men on earth. He is now part of history and there is no going back on that. Items presented by The History Buff, Inc. represent part of the historical record of man and are placed for sale without prejudice. Hitler represents that part of human nature which the founders of our country, like James Madison, called "the depravity of man." It was not by accident that our founding documents were designed in part to restrain that very 'depravity'. Jefferson was particularly prescient when he warned, "Man must be bound by the chains of law."
