Adolf Hitler (1889 – 1945) was an Austrian-born politician who led the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei NSDAP),or the Nazi Party. He was Chancellor of Germany (1933–1945) and Führer und Reichskanzler of Germany (1934–1945).

This offering is a postcard image that was taken at the Wagner Festival in 1938 in Bayreuth.Pictured with Hitler are two of Wagner's granddaughters. The image is standard post card size. The image is signed both by Adolph Hitler as well as by Richard Wagner's two granddaughters Friedelied and Verena. (IMAGE LEFT ABOVE) The girls were the progeny of Wager's son Seigfried and his second wife. The granddaughters posed with the Führer are perfect specimens of Aryan nobility as envisioned by National Socialist principles and agenda. The signed post card is accompanied by a book commemorating the Wagner festival in 1938.The unsigned image of Hitler and the women is printed in the book as shown. The book is a very scarce link to an early Wagner festival.

The Bayreuth Festival is a music festival held annually in Bayreuth, Germany, at which performances of operas by the 19th century German composer Richard Wagner are presented. Wagner himself conceived of and promoted the idea of a special festival to showcase his own works, in particular his monumental cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal. It is now clear from history that Hitler was a great admirer of Wagner-both his music and his ideology. In fact Hitler wrote , "With the exception of Richard Wagner, I have no forerunner." Scholars argue that it was Wagner's anti Semitism that was the motivating force for much of his artistic work.Hitler and Wagner also shared the belief that an "Aryan" white race is the foundation of racial purity, beauty, and goodness. No wonder Hitler was motivated to attend the Wagner festival that became for him not only an artistic but also a political or ideological tour de force. Hitler was also very close to Wagner's second wife Winifred (there were even rumors that they would marry) and he befriended the children in the family and treated them as his own. The apparent parallels between Wagner's visions and that of the Nazis are clear and concise. Wagner influenced Hitler throughout his entire life from the Nazi beginnings in the 1920s (“Siegfried’s Rhine Journey”) to the collapse of the Third Reich (“Götterdämmerung”).The importance of this offering then is that it is one of the only historical artifacts connecting Adolph Hitler to Richard Wagner (his two granddaughters) and therefore would be an important addition to either a Wagner or Hitler collection.

Wagner festival book 1938 with Hitler image

There is a book, as mentioned previously, titled Richard Wagner und die Stadt der Meistersinger that was produced to celebrate the 125th birth year of the immortal musician, Richard Wagner. It was published in 1938 with a foreword written by Richard Wilhelm Stock in which he cites Wagner's warnings about a Jewish menace in the arts that was carried into the policies of the Nazis. The entire book has photos and references to Adolf Hitler's reverence and respect for the Wagner's and his music. As shown above the image of Hitler with the Wagner's granddaughters with their printed signatures below the image is reproduced in the book ( SEE IMAGE ON THE RIGHT ABOVE TOP OF LISTING ). In addition to that photograph, there are images of the Führer with Winifred Wagner, and also many of the party leaders are shown during visits to Bayreuth. In addition the book has many beautiful photographs showing the Wagner family, scenes from the operas, and Wagner musical productions. The book has 230 pages with a linen-like cover. If a client also want this book we will attempt to acquire one for them.

Needless to say, this listing is not to be misconstrued as an endorsement or glorification of Adolph Hitler or his policies. Hitler was a major leader of an important country and, at one time, he was one of the most powerful men on earth. He is now part of history and there is no going back on that. Items presented by The History Buff, Inc. represent part of the historical record of man and are placed for sale without prejudice. Hitler represents that part of human nature which the founders of our country, like James Madison, called "the depravity of man." It was not by accident that our founding documents were designed in part to restrain that very 'depravity'. Jefferson was particularly prescient when he warned, "Man must be bound by the chains of law."
