- Erich Honecker ( 1912 1994).
He was a German Communist politician
who led German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1971 until
1989. He carried out the orders to
construct
one of the most deplorable works of man, The Berlin Wall.
He was the leader of East Germany for almost all of the
time the wall existed and he was still leader when the wall came
down.He pleaded with the Russian to stop the mob with force. After
German re-unification, he first fled to the Soviet Union but
was extradited by the new Russian government to Germany, where
he was imprisoned and tried for high treason and crimes committed
during the Cold War (specifically the deaths of 192 Germans who
tried to escape the Honecker regime). However, as he was dying
of cancer, he was released from prison. He died in exile in Chile
about a year and a half later.

- Michael Gorbachev( 1931).(Russian: Mihail Sergeevic Gorbacëv),commonly
anglicized as Gorbachev was leader of the Soviet Union from 1985
until 1991. His attempts at reform
helped
to end the Cold War, but also ended the political supremacy of
the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and dissolved
the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.When
the Warsaw Pact leaders argued for the use of force to stop the
march of freedom in Germany, Poland and elsewhere in what was
known as the Communist Bloc, Gorbachev to his credit resisted
so a massive blood letting was averted and history took its course.
The photo to the right shows President Ronald Reagan and Gorbachev
standing before a section of the Berlin Wall that was shipped
to the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California.Of course, President
Ronald W. Wilson is generally credited with having provided the
leadership that led to the demise of the Soviet Union and the
wall coming down. See
Photo on this web site signed and inscribed by by Reagan with
his famous admonition:"Mr. Gobachev, Tear Down This Wall!."

- Leonid Brezhnev Russian ( 1906
1982). He was the effective ruler
of the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1982, though at first in partnership
with others. He was General Secretary of the Communist Party
of the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1982, and was twice Chairman
of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (head of state), from
1960 to 1964 and from 1977 to 1982.The first crisis of Brezhnev's
regime came in 1968, with the attempt by the Communist leadership
in Czechoslovakia, under Alexander Dubcek, to liberalize the
Communist system In July, Brezhnev publicly criticized the Czech
leadership as "revisionist" and "anti-Soviet,"
and, in August, he orchestrated the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia
and the removal of the Dubcek leadership. The invasion led to
public protests by dissidents in the Soviet Union. Brezhnev's
assertion that the Soviet Union had the right to interfere in
the internal affairs of its satellites to "safeguard socialism"
became known as the Brezhnev Doctrine, although it was
really a restatement of existing Soviet policy, as Khrushchev
had shown in Hungary in 1956. While Soviet leader he assiduously
maintained and streghthened the Berlin Wall.
