Charles Breton Huggins, M.D (1901 - 1997) and Francis) Peyton Rous (1879 – 1970). These two researchers were awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize in Medicine. They were both Doctors of Medicine whose lives were devoted not to clinical medicine but to the basic science laboratory. Neither of these individuals are well know but the 1966 prize was one of the most important medicine prizes from a clinical standpoint. The Huggins work introduced the concept that you could influence the clinical behavior of a cancer by altering its hormonal environment. And the work of Peyton Rous stimulated the search for a human cancer virus that laid the foundation for understanding Burkitt's Lymphoma, cancer of the cervix and ? other human epidermoid cancers as well as the discovery of the AIDS Virus.

Huggins was a Canadian-born American physician (urologist) and physiologist and cancer researcher specializing in prostate cancer. His basic research in castrate dogs showed that the size and rate of growth of the canine prostate was influenced by the male hormone. This observation eventually led to the treatment of advanced cancer of the prostate by either castration or the administration of female hormones. But Huggins was awarded the prize because his work more broadly suggested that human cancers could be treated by altering their hormonal environment. This concept has been applied clinically with great benefit to patients with cancer of the breast and prostate among others.Huggins is one of several surgeons who have won the Nobel Prize-the others being Kocher, Carrel, Murray, Banting, Moinz and Forssman. Forssman also was an urologist who was awarded his prize for the role he played in developing cardiac catheterization.

Peyton Rous along with Huggins was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Rous was the co-recipient of the Nobel for discovering the Rous sarcoma virus in fowl. Rous was working at Rockefeller University when he made the observation that a filterable xetract from the sarcoma of one chickens would induce similar cancers when injected in other fowl This work was initially discredited but turned out to be an observation of immense scientific importance. Rous's work stimulated the search for a human cancer virus that resulted in the advances in virology detailed previously herein.
