Iwo Jima Flag Raising signed by Photographer Joe Rosenthal. This photograph is arguably the most famous military or battle image in history. Joe Rosenthal captured this historic image on the spur of the moment and recorded it for all history. This photograph is, of course,shows five triumphant Marines and a Navy Corpman assigned to the Marines raising the flag after Mount Surabachi was captured.Only two of the flagraisers survived the battle. What is less well know is that this was actually the second flag raising and came about because the first flag was deemed to be too small. Also it should be noted that the second, or the flag shown in this photograph, came originally from a ship that was damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
