- Andrew Jackson (1767-1845).
7th President of the
U.S. (1829-1837). Uncommon Document Signed, as President,
being a ship's passport for the whaleship, the "Gideon
Barstow of Rochester [Massachusetts], Thomas Levenier,
master," to sail from New Bedford, Massachusetts, dated
June 13th, 1836, one page, folio, on vellum, countersigned by
John Forsythe as Secretary of State.
-
- The Barstow family was long
associated with shipbuilding and whaling in the historic New
Bedford District. They were located in the waterfront village
of Mattapoisett (at the time incorporated in the town of Rochester).
Mattapoisett was the most famous whaleship building port in the
world. The list of known vessels built there was over 300. Gideon
Barstow & Son were one of the more prominent shipbuilders.
They constructed the whaling ship Acushnet in 1840. On
her maiden voyage she carried Herman Melville, who immortalized
the whaling saga in his work Moby Dick.
-
- It was likely that the ship
Gideon Barstow was named for Dr. Gideon Barstow (1783-1852),
a member of the shipbuilding family who became a physician and
prominent ante-bellum politician from Massachusetts. He first
served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-1823), then
the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1823, 1829,
1833, 1837), and finally the State senate (1827,1834).
Wafer seal intact, scalloped edge along top margin, normal folds,
soiling, overall in very good condition. Jackson ship's passports
are very uncommon and seldom appear on the market. This would
make an ideal addition to any collection. $2,950.
