Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973). 36th President of the United States (1963-1969). Dramatic & Historic Typed Letter Signed as President. One page, octavo, on official "The White House Washington" letterhead stationary, Washington, April 4th, 1968, signed: "Lyndon B. Johnson". An historic letter to a Hollywood icon, four days following his stunning announcement not to seek the nomination for the presidency for another term, Johnson writes to old friend Edward G. Robinson (1893- 1973), the great American movie actor.

The letter reads in part:

"Dear Mr. Robinson: I am proud to have your continued confidence. My decision was difficult, but I have the faith to believe that it will prove wise and healing in helping to unite Americans and so advance the day of peace. There is no higher or more urgent interest. I ask your hand in this vital purpose with all gratitude and hope."

By early 1968 US policy in South Vietnam had sharply divided the American people. Our military forces had reached almost a half million men, and more tonnage of bombs had been dropped on North Vietnam than upon Europe in World War II. On March 31, 1968, Johnson in a dramatic television broadcast announced that he was ordering a halt to the bombing of North Vietnam in the hope that this could lead to a beginning of peace negotiations. He went on to declare: "What we won when all of our people united must not be lost in suspicion and distrust and selfishness and politics among any of our people... With American sons in the fields far away, with America's future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world's hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes... I shall not seek, and will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President." Authentically signed LBJ letters with full signature are rare. In fine condition.

This letter come with a letter of authenticity as to its origin, history and authenticity.
