Robert Edward Lee (1807–1870) was a career military officer who is best known for having commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War.
This is a bold signature in ink and signed as, "R. E. Lee" a seperate hand has written underneath the signature, "General Robert E. Lee Lexington VA, March 8, 1869" This means that this signature was signed shortly before he died and while he was still president of Washington and Lee University. The paper on which the writing appears shows aging but otherwise in good condition. The signature is matted with a portrait of Lee.
