Douglas MacArthur (1880 - 1964). U.S. Army General.One of three Theater Commanders in World war II and legendary American Hero. Among his accomplishments were graduating from West Point (USMA), thereafter he became Superintendent of the USMA (1919-22), and then he became a full 4-star General and Army Chief of Staff 1930 but retired in 1937. He was recalled to duty 1941 and became Supreme Allied Commander in SW Pacific in WW II and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1942. MacArthur became General of the Army (5 stars) in 1945. He was Supreme Commander of UN forces in Korea (1950-51) until he was dismissed by Truman. He had a brief sojourn into politics seeking the Republican nomination in 1952 which he lost to another general-Eisenhower.

engraved West Point insignia at top (with printed "Duty,
Honor, Country" motto). This printed speech transcript is
signed on the cover Douglas MacArthur in a bold
ink pen signature.This speech is considered one of the greatest
speeches ever given thus ending with that immortal refrain,
Today marks my final roll call with you, but I want you
to know that when I cross the river my last conscious thoughts
will be of The Corps, and The Corps, and The Corps. I bid you
farewell.

Since 1958, the Association of Graduates of
the United States Military Academy has presented the SYLVANUS
THAYER AWARD to an outstanding citizen of the United States whose
service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify
personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto,
DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY. It has been awarded to non-graduates
of West Point over the years.All have been outstanding Americans
like Bob Dole, Colin Powell, Paul Nitze and Henry Kissinger.
