With the North Korean invasion of South Korea in June 1950, MacArthur was named commander of the United Nations forces by President Truman. After a series of setbacks that summer he landed the American Forces at Inchon behind enemy lines in September, routing the North Koreans, and pushing them back to the Chinese border along the Yalu River. That action precipitated a mainland-based Chinese Communist counteroffensive in November which pushed the Americans back to the 38th Parallel. By January 1951 the MacArthur led American military forces were again pushing into North Korean. Despite orders to the contrary, MacArthur began a public campaign to force President Truman to attack mainland China and blockade its coasts.MacArthur believed that the purpose of war was to win a swift victory and he expressed his thoughts in the aforementioned speech before Congress when he said, "in war there is no substitute for victory." In March, MacArthur sent a letter to the Republican minority leader in the House calling for a broad war to defeat Communism in the Far East. That action compelled President Truman to relieve him of his command in April.

When MacArthur was relieved of his command for advocating a vigorous agenda for confronting and defeating Communism in Asia he was invited to address a joint session of Congress and the speech he gave is still considered one of the greatest in American history. It is know as the" old soldiers never die they just fade away" speech but also within that speech there were other enduring phrases among which were " In war there is no substitute for victory" and his admonition "don't scuttle the pacific." His speech ended with the haunting lament about old soldiers and then he said his final "good bye" to the nation he served so well.May he RIP.
