- George Catlett Marshall (1880-1959) was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the U.S. Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.
- This offering is a printed 3" x 5" quote signed G. Marshall. The quote reads as follows--"We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle, Our Flag will be recognized throughout the World as a symbol of Freedom on the one hand and Overwhelming Power on the other." This is an important statement. It was made when America was still a great country that felt its mission to defeat evil in the world was being carried out with what FDR called "righteous might" and that the country felt no compunction to apologize for the exercise of our power in the cause of freedom around the world.
- The signed quote is accompanied by an original photograph that includes Marshall and a grouping of Allied Officers meeting in the Conference Room of the Combined chiefs of Staff building in D.C. who were planning the downfall of Hitler. Affixed to the back of the photograph is a listing of the individuals involved in the meeting --names like Dill, Deane,E.J. King, Leahy, Horn, Evill, etc.
