- Anthony C.McAuliffe (1898-1975).
McAuliffe was the commanding
general of the U.S. Army Forces defending Bastogne during the
Battle of the Bulge late in the second world war. When Bastogne
was completely surrounded by the Germans they gave McAuliffe
a surrender ultimatum. According to the best available acounts,
McAuliffe paused and resoponded, "Aww, nuts."
That response is now very much part of The American
Army's legend.
