This is an 8 in x 11.5 in color photograph of plane signed by 8 crew members.This plane was scheduled to be the strike plane for the Nagasaki mission but that roll was reassigned to Bockscar at the last minute. In fact the media mistakenly reported that The Great Artiste was the plane that dropped the bomb for weeks after the mission was completed.The photograph is signed by 8 crew members including Fred Bock (of Bockscar fame) and Lawrenence Johnston the only man to see the detonation of all three atomic bombs: the autographs of Bock and Johnston are very scarce. [John F. Kennedy] PT-109. Two First Day Covers Signed. A set of FDC's honoring JFK, the first issue, d. May 29, 1964, was signed by 7 crew members from PT-109; the second issue, d. September 7, 1968 was signed by 2 crew members from the Amagiri, the Japanese destroyer that sank PT-109. PT 109 was cut in two by the Japanese destroyer on August 2, 1943 in the Solomon Islands. Kennedy and his crew were rescued after Kennedy gave two natives a coconut shell on which he carved the following: NAURO ISL COMMANDER...NATIVE KNOWS POS'IT...HE CAN PILOT...11 ALIVE NEED SMALL BOAT...KENNEDY. A remarkable association relating to one of the defining moments of Kennedy's life. In fine condition. $1,000. Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964). U.S. Army General. Historic Typed Letter Signed, "Douglas MacArthur, one page, quarto, dated November 7, 1961, New York. A powerful and revealing letter to a friend of the family, mentioning his father's neighborhood in Milwaukee and his friendship with Secretary of War Stimson, he conveys his innermost thoughts with alacrity on the missed opportunity of Korean War. In part, "Had we gone on beyond the Yalu we would have destroyed Red China and it would no longer be a menace to the free world. We could have done so very easily and the whole outlook of mankind would be different today." A very historic letter, it shows normal aging, with a few light creases. A Very Choice Signature, "Nelson d Bronte", on laid paper, clipped from a document and affixed to an antique engraved portrait of the Admiral dressed in uniform. The engraving is by J. Extraordinarily Rare Documents, being "General Orders No. 69" awarding Beser the Silver Star as a crewmember on the Enola Gay which dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, one page (recto/verso), quarto, on "HEADQUARTERS TWENTIETH AIR FORCE" typed heading, d. 20 September 1945, and "General Orders No. 71" awarding Beser the Distinguished Flying Cross as a crewmember on the Bockscar which dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, one page (recto/verso), quarto, on "HEADQUARTERS TWENTIETH AIR FORCE" typed heading, d. 22 September 1945. Each Order lists the crew by rank and describes in detail the mission.The letter for Hiroshima is signed by 'Dutch" Van Kirk, navigator Enola Gay and the Nagasaki award is signed by Don Albury, Co-pilot Bockscar.Price:$OLD [World War II]: An Original, Rare and Historic, War-Dated Hiroshima Area Target Map, Chart #23, printed on June 16, 1945, by The 949th Engineer Aviation Topographic Company attached to the 21st Bomber Command on Guam; measuring approximately 16 in. by 16 ¾ in., being a lithographic print in three colors (green, blue and black) on white map stock.
