- ean Francois Millet (1814-1875).
French Landscape Painter
of the Barbizon School, especially noted for The Angelus and
The Gleaners. Very Good
Content Autograph Letter Signed, one page, octavo, Barbizon,
dated December 22, 1867, discussing the sudden death of his friend
and leading post-impressionist painter, Theodore Rousseau. Reads:
"Our poor Rousseau died this morning at nien o'clock. Although
we expected it, as the physcican
said the end could not be far off, we were none the less overwhelmed
& 'knocked -up'. His funeral is to be next Tuesday, the burial
to take place at one o'clock precisely. If you can come, we embrace
you all. J.F. Millet." In outstanding letter of deeply moving
content. Accompanied with an 4.25 in. by 5.5 in., head and shoulder
self-portrait of Millet. Letter shows normal folds, aging, very
light soiling, minor crease on lower left margin. Overall, in
very good condition.
