Walter F.(Fritz) Mondale (
1928-) Mondale is an
American politician and member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor
Party (largely established by former Vice President Hubert H.
Humphrey). He was the 42nd Vice President of the United States
(1977-1981) under President Jimmy Carter. He was also a two-term
United States Senator from Minnesota and he was the Democratic
Party nominee for president in 1984 against the incumbent, Republican
Ronald Reagan. Mondale suffered a crushing defeat as Reagan was
re-elected in a landslide victory in which Mondale carried only
his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia.Mondale
chose U.S. Representative Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York shown
in this photo) as his running mate in the 1984 campaign, making
her the first woman nominated for that position by a major party.
Aides later said that Mondale was determined to establish a precedent
with his vice presidential candidate.Mondale is a straight down
the line liberal, farther left than his mentor "Our beloved
Hubert."He had a distinguished career of public service
but ended it when he stepped forward as the party loyalist to
pick up the flag after Paul Wellstone was killed in a plane accident.Mondale
was defeated by Coleman in the contest for Wellstone's Senate
seat from Minnesota. This photograph was taken the morning
Mondale announced his choice for Vice President or his running
mate in the 1984 Presidential campaign, Geraldine Ferraro. The
photograph was taken in the Minnesota House Chamber. It is a
8 in x 10 in B&W photo that is signed by both Mondale and
Ferraro.
The photograph will
be come with a letter of authenticity as to
its origin, history and
authenticity.
