William Moultrie (1731-1805). American Revolutionary War Hero, Patriot, Major General, Governor of South Carolina.

Moultrie gained renown by defending South Carolina from the Cherokee Indians in 1761, and served in the colonial assembly before the advent of the American Revolution. In the war his gallant defense of a small fort on Sullivans Island (later named Fort Moultrie) prevented (1776) Sir Henry Clinton and Sir Peter Parker from taking Charleston, South Carolina. Even Moultrie's skill failed to prevent the fall of Savannah, Georgia to the British in 1778. He was captured in the fall of Charleston to the British in 1780. After the war he served as governor of South Carolina (1785-87, 1795-97).

Very Rare War-Dated Autograph Document Signed, one page, large octavo (approximately 7.5 in. by 7 in.), on chain laid paper, dated July 15, 1778, being a military dispatch to the Governor of South Carolina and an American Revolutionary War leader, Rawlins Lowndes (1721-1800), to raise funds for troop support. I am your Excellency Most humbl Servt Willm Moultrie Brig General"

Signed and endorsed by Lowndes and Captain Calvin Spencer (1753-1801), an American patriot who served under Moultrie and Francis Marion during the war. Document shows normal aging and handling, crossfolds Address on verso visible on lower portion of document. Overall, very good. With antique engraving of Moultrie. Ideal for framing. $2,500.
