German WW II battle flag. This large flag (8'4" x 54.5 in ) is sometimes referred to as a Kriegsmarine battle flag but they were also used by other services.The flag has the characteristic canton of an Iron Cross as shown.It is printed the same on both sides(one side only shown).The construction of the flag is consisrtent with a Nazi battle flag of that era. The hoist (or bunting) is bound in heavy cloth and the field or ground of the flag is made of cotton cloth.Note the unique basketweave binding of the halyards on the hoist of the flag (below).

There are markings on the border of the flag including its metric size also consistent with flag markings of that era. It is not marked as Kriegsmarine flag so it may well have been used on land. Any German National War Flag could have been flown on a Kriegsschiff (war ship), but it's more likely they were flown at Luftwaffe airfields, Wehrmacht facilities,barracks, or even POW camps. If the bunting is stamped as this one is with something like "LOH.KR-FL. 150x250" it could have been flown in any of these
places. The source for this flag stated that the person who gave it to them, a WW II vet, said that it came from a headquarters building and that provenance is therefore consistentt with the stamping on this flag.The flag is in remarkable condition unlike some similar flags that have come to market recently. These flags traditionaly are listed for between $900-$1600 and there is a similar one for sale at the time of this writing that is minus the canton (Iron Cross) because that area of the flag is missing and the asking price for that flag is $1600.
