The
lot also contains a small card signed Eleanor Roosevelt and a
postal cover with her image as shown and a typed letter on White
House stationery, dated January 23, 1936 sending regrets that
the president cannot comply with an autograph request and signed
M.A. LeHand.Marguerite "Missy" LeHand (1898
- 1944) was private secretary to former U.S. President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt for many years. She was rumored to
have had an affair with Roosevelt who rewrote his will to leave
half of his estate for "Missy", effectively cutting
his children out.
-
- Also included are autographs
of the three vice-presidents who served under Roosevelt: Harry
S. Truman-1945, James Garner 1933-41 and Henry
Wallace 1941-45. Truman (as VP) is responding to a request
to have he and his family return some cards with their autographs.
Truman responds in typical fashion, " No cards enclosed--Harry
S Truman", n.p. but surely Washington, D.C, Feb 8, 1945.
Apparently Truman also underlined the request for emphasis.A
typical Truman response-short and to the point. The letter is
in good condition and Truman's writing is bold.A chance to own
a Truman autograph that truly reflects the man.
- The rest of the collection consists
of ALL OF THE MEMBERS WHO SERVED IN THE CABINET (# 25 different
individuals-some served in more than one cabinet post at different
times) DURING FDR's FOUR ADMINISTRATIONS. All AUTOGRAPHS are
on cards, some of which are from the branch of government they
headed.Others are on small white cards of varying sizes but in
almost every case they represent clear signatures from some type
of pen.Names that will be familiar with the presidential history
of that time are, among others, Hull, Ickes, Knox, Dern, Stettinius,
Farley, Murphy, Roper, Wickard, Woodring and many others. In
all total there are thirty five autographs in the collection.
All cards are in good condition and they all show normal aging
and toning. Here are a few of the cards.
