[John F. Kennedy] PT-109. Two First Day Covers Signed. A set of FDC's honoring JFK, the first issue, d. May 29, 1964, was signed by 7 crew members from PT-109; the second issue, d. September 7, 1968 was signed by 2 crew members from the Amagiri, the Japanese destroyer that sank PT-109.

PT 109 was cut in two by the Japanese destroyer on August 2, 1943 in the Solomon Islands. Kennedy and his crew were rescued after Kennedy gave two natives a coconut shell on which he carved the following: NAURO ISL COMMANDER...NATIVE KNOWS POS'IT...HE CAN PILOT...11 ALIVE NEED SMALL BOAT...KENNEDY.
