Carl Sandberg (1878 1967). Sandberg was a Swedish-American poet, historian, novelist, balladeer and folklorist. He was born in Galesburg, Illinois of Swedish parents. H. L. Mencken called Carl Sandburg "indubitably an American in every pulse-beat." He was a successful journalist, poet, historian, biographer, and autobiographer. During the course of his career, Sandburg won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln: The War Years) and one for his collection of poems. His works on Lincoln are considered classics in the field of Lincolnania. Anyone who wants immersion in the life of Lincoln could appropriately begin by digesting these volumes. This offering is a very scarce boxed six volume set of Sandberg's The War Years (First edition, First Printing) and The Prairie Years. Abraham Lincoln The War Years. An exceptional set of Carl Sandburg's four volume set of The War Years of Abraham Lincoln.These are First Edition, First Printing , as evidenced by the yellow staining on the top pages of all four volumes. The books are in very fine condition and give the impression that this is almost a new set. There are some aging marks, here and there, but these are rare. Bound in the publisher's dark blue cloth with bright gilt lettering on the spines and Abraham Lincoln's words in his handwiritng embossed on front:":Your Obt. Servt A Lincoln " .Fore-edges of pages are rough-cut. There are Illustrations throughout with numerous black-and-white photographs and facsimiles of handwriting. no damage or bumping. A wonderful set of four clean and tight, very fine volumes. Published by: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1939. Unusual offering since these rare volumes and are usually sold only in rare book stores.
