Typed Letter Signed, one page, octavo, October 8, 1937, on official "THE ROCKEFELLER INSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH" letterhead, New York. A short letter arranging a meeting with a colleague. Signed: "Yours very sincerely, Alexis Carrel". A nice letter on the letterhead from where he obtained the Nobel prize. Normal aging, folds, pencil notation in another's hand on upper right, otherwise in fine condition. A nice sample on the Carrel letters are scarce. Price:$OLD. Frederick Banting, M,D, (1891-1941) and Charles Best (1899-1978). Two signed cards by the two most important scientists involved in the discovery of insulin. Banting is very scare because he died relatively young.Price: $OLD Hans Albrecht Bethe ; (July 2, 1906--March 6, 2005), was a German-American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1967 for his work on the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis.This theory goes to the heart of our understanding of how all the known elements in the universe were formed. During World War II, he was head of the Theoretical Division at the secret Los Alamos laboratory developing the first atomic bombs. There he played a key role in calculating the critical mass of the weapons, and did theoretical work on the implosion method, along with Kistiakowsky, used in both the Trinity test and the "Fat Man" weapon dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.This offering is a signed First Day cover with a typed quote attributed to Bethe about stamp collecting:--"my album is the only place I know at the moment where all nations of the world stick together peaceably." In this wonderfully written letter Darwin enthusiastically replies to the growing discipline of Anthropology, a field which he virtually opened up with the publication of the Origins of Species. Very Good Content Typed Letter Signed, with his famed 'umbrella' signature, one page, quarto, on Official "From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison" official stationary, dated January 28, 1912, Orange, NJ. Edison replies to his former colleague and chief electrical engineer for the New York City "incandescent light" project, Charles Edgar, who was seeking funds to endow Rutgers. In part: "while I am in sympathy with the idea, the Storage Battery and the new phonograph keep me poor at present...". Beautiful umbrella signature. This piece was acquired directly from the Edgar family and has never been offered on the market before. Overall, very fine piece with outstanding signature, and ideal for framing. $OLD. Thomas A. This program was one of the events on that 1945 tour.It was a dinner held in the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia on June 18, 1945.The program measures 6 in. x 8 in. and is a typical dinner program with the menu printed on the inside of the cover and opposite that is the outline of the program and list of speakers as well as some Flemming quotes as demostrated above. The cover is signed Alexander Flemming in dark blue fountain pen ink as shown.With the exception of the toning from age the program is in good condition. Osler was one of the most, if not the most, influential physicians in modern history. He was born in Canada, educated at McGill University and held distinguished positions at Penn and Johns Hopkins before he became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford.He was a brilliant clinician and educator and a prolific contributor to the medical literature. One of his greatest but least known accomplishments was his contribution to establishing the modern American residency training system while he was a member of the 'Big Four' in medicine at Hopkins (other members of that group were Halstead, Kelley and Welch) By establishing a period of formal training for aspiring young physicians. Abraham Flexner and the physician greats at Hopkins helped lift American Medicine out of the 'apprentice' system for training physicians and thus helped make American medicine what is now admired as the 'gold standard' for the world:excellence begins with rigorous training.
