Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull

George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876) was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. After the War Between the State, Custer was eventually assigned to the North Dakotra territory. It was in this last assignment that he was killed at the famous Battle of Little Big Horn. Volumes have been written about this battle and the site of the battle is now a national historic site. The Custer autograph is signed, "G A Custer US Army" and is signed in ink on a approx. 3 x 5 inch slip of paper. The signature is bold and the paper is well preserved.

Sitting Bull (circa 1831–1890) was a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man known for his steadfast opposition to the intrusion of the U.S. government into Sioux lands. Sitting Bull’s “vision” of the defeat of American troops prior to the Battle of Little Bighorn proved prescient, indeed, and it was largely through his leadership and inspiration that the Cheyenne and Sioux decisively overcame Custer’s 7th Cavalry.

Signature is affixed to a 3.5x5 inches piece of paper. Paper is in good condition as is the signature. Signature is bold but the letter provenance from D.F. Barry suggests that Bull was ill and may have been on his death bed when he signed this autograph.

A letter of provenance from the well known photographer of Indians D.F. Barry accompanied Bull's autograph. The letter from Barry is on 6 in x 9 in stationary sheet dated June 19th, 1889, Bismark, North Dakota on D.F. Barry's letterhead. The body letter reads, "Here in please find Sitting Bull's autograph. This was written on 12th of June, 1889... Sitting Bull was sick a bed when he wrote this. He is still sick... I got a no of new photos on this try. If Bull dies this autograph will be invaluable and the last one he has written. Yours Truly DF Barry"
