Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn (b. 1918). Russian Author & Nobel Laureate (1970). Typed Manuscript Signed, one page, quarto, being a transcription of the first page of the Gulag Archipelago, his most famous novel.Although this is not the work for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, most historians believe its publication was a seminal event which made him the most important literary figure of the last century.Solzhenitsyn's work called the profound evil of Stalin and communism to the attention of the entire world. Here is a quote from the typescript that illustrates the point:
After the publication of Gulag, it was no longer possible for either the empty headed 'intellectuals' of most of the world or the left-leaning media in the United Sttes to find any redeeming qualities in the Soviet system--although they tried hard enough. Some argue that the publication of this book had a profound effect on many Americans including Ronald Reagan and that it was therefore the pebble that started an avalanche of revulsion which eventually led to the downfall of the Soviet Union.
