Paul W. Tibbets (1915-2007 ) Tibbets was born in the corn belt in Iowa and had a typical boyhood for that region in that era. He went on to distinguish himself as a military pilot and based on his record he was chosen to put together the 509th Composite Bomb Group of the 20th Air Force that was responsible for dropping the two atomic bombs on Japan in August of 1945. Tibbets alone was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his role in the piloting of the Enola Gay. The rest of the crew received The Distinguished Flying Cross
