Paul W. Tibbets (1915- ) Tibbets was born in the corn belt in Iowa and had a typical boyhood for that era. He went on to distinguish himself as a pilot and based on his record he was chosen to put together the 509th Composite Bomb Group of the 20th Air Force that was responsible for dropping the two atomic bombs on Japan in August of 1945. Tibbets alone was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role in the piloting of the Enola Gay. The rest of the crew received The Distinguished Flying Cross (see the write up on Jacon Beser on our web site). Book Description: Buckeye Aviation Book Company, Reynoldsburg, OH, 1989. Tibbets goes through his training in the military, talks about test flying the B-47, and how dropping the bomb on Hiroshima has affected he and his crew. Included are photographs and an index. This copy is very clean and is SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the dedication page as To John, With Best Regards, Paul W. Tibbets 11/12/89.. Tibbets is one of the last survivors among the Atomic Bombers. This particular book is difficult to find.
