Paul W. Tibbets (1915- ) Tibbets was born in the corn belt in Iowa and had a typical boyhood for that era. He went on to distinguish himself as a pilot and based on his record he was chosen to put together the 509th Composite Bomb Group of the 20th Air Force that was responsible for dropping the two atomic bombs on Japan in August of 1945. Tibbets alone was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role in the piloting of the Enola Gay.
