Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright
IV (18831953). Lieutenant
General, the commanding officer of the Philippine Department
at the time of its surrender to the Japanese, during World War
II. One of the great tragic figures of the war, Wainwright was
the senior field commander of US/Filipino forces; responsible
for resisting the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, which
began in December 1941. They held out for nearly six months.
By June 9, the Philippine Department had completely surrendered.
