George Washington Free Frank and address leaf all in his hand

George Washington. (1732-1799) .1st President of the United States (1789-1797).Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. Address panel as Commander In Chief with Free Frank signed "G: Washington" at lower left and "Free" at upper right, 7¼" x 8¾", 1778 June 6. Addressed in Washington's hand to his adjutant, "Colonel Baylor / Light Dragoons / Fredericksburg." Very fine; toning around folds; seal tear has been closed and the panel is inlaid, lightly tipped to a ssimilr leaf for preservation and display purposes; red wax seal is present. With a 10" x 8" color, head-and-shoulders portrait of Washington in uniform.

The above letter that was sent by Washington to George Baylor from Valley Forge Headquarters on June 6 of 1778.At this point the main winter ordeal at Valley Forge was behind Washington and the army was on the move or getting ready to move.

The 3rd Continental Light Dragoons also known as Baylor's Horse or Lady Washington's Horse was raised on January 1, 1777 at Morristown, New Jersey for service with the Continental Army.Light Dragoon Continental Army The regiment would see action at the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown and the Battle of Guilford Court House. The regiment was caught sleeping at farmhouses in the Baylor Massacre of September 1778, sustaining heavy losses.baylor was wounded but rejoined the Continental Army and was made a Brevt general at the end of the war. In 1779 the Regiment rescued Signer James Wilson during the "Fort Wilson Riot". The regiment was merged into the 1st Continental Light Dragoons on November 2, 1782.

A dragoon in the Continental Army (Image Left) was a soldier who was primarily trained to fight on foot but who rode to battle on a horse. Such soldiers were often at a disadvantage to well trained and equipped cavalry.
