General Sir Archibald Wavell

Autograph Lettter and Classic Book-Generals and
Generalship

Sir Archibald Percival Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell ( 1883 - 1950), GCB, GCSI, GCIE, CMG, MC, PC. General Wavell was a British Field Marshall in World War II. He served in North Africa where he defeated the Italians early in the war and almost had secured North Africa. When the Germans attacked Greece, his forces were drawn away for that battle which allowed the Germans to reinforce North Africa and Wavell was eventually defeated there by the Germans. Wavell went on to serve in Burma and later became an outstanding Viceroy of India. This offering consists of two items. The first is an autograph letter written on The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews stationery that reads--Dear---your letter of August 25 has just reached me here.If it i only a question of a few sentences from the annotation to Other Men's Flowers, I do not think you need trouble. I will send your letter to Jonathan Cape as I happen to be writing about something else but you needn't wait hear from Him I am sure. I wish your book all success. Yours sincerely, Wavell. Dated 7/9/48. Wavell makes reference in this letter to his anthology of poetry Other Men's Flowers which he published with Jonathan Cape also mentioned in the letter. Wavell was, among his many talents also a poet. The letter is in excellent condition and the fountain pen writing is bold and dark throughout.

The second item in this offering is a first printing of Wavell's classic series of lectures entitled Generals and Generalship. These lectures were given at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1939. Not only are these lectures a classic in military writing but General Erwin Rommel obtained a copy of them, had them bound in leather and he carried the lectures with him throughout the war. After the war and after Rommel was forced to kill himself because of his supposed involvement in the plot to kill Hitler, Mrs. Rommel took her husband's book and presented it to Mrs. Wavell in England.

This is the 1941 or first printing of the lectures (with the permission of the London Times). These lectures have been reprinted many times since but this early printing is virtually unobtainable. The octavo book, 36 pages in length, shows mild wear to its hard cover and the internal pages show normal aging but the book is in otherwise excellent condition.
