Paul Warfield Tibbets, Jr. (1915 – 2007).The Uniform Colonel Tibbets wore on the Hiroshima mission and the Distinguished Service Cross Tibbets was awarded for the misssion.General Tibbets was a Brigadier General in the United States Air Force, best known for being the pilot of the Enola Gay, the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb. This offering is a one of a kind artifact from the history making event that caused the Japanese to surrender and thus bring WW II to a close. This flight suit is the one Tibbets wore to Hiroshima and it was identified as such by Tibbets in a letter of provenance that will be provided.. The suit has the Air Force patch on the left shoulder that is seen in a photograph that was taken as he disembarked from the Enola Gay after retuning from the strike on Hiroshima. The attached medal is the Distinguished Service Cross that was awarded to Tibbets on the tarmac on Tinian by Air Force General Spaatz..The suit has the same construction as other flight suits from the 509th. According to survivors of the 509th they did not attach much importance to these garments and many of them were worn as regular clothes or for performing household chores such as working in the garden after the war.The suit is in pristine condition having been carefully preserved for over 50 years. The Distinguished Service Cross is still attached to the left chest where it was placed by General Spaatz. A remarkable historical find.

In 1907 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics. He became the first American to receive the Nobel Prize . The prize recognized two of Michelson's accomplishments: his design of extremely sensitive optical (light-gathering) instruments, and the accurate measurements of the speed of light were made using those instruments.Albert Michelson is one of the rarest autographs among American Nobel Laureats or scientists in general. John Dunlap.Facsimile of an Original Dunlap Broadside. This facsimile was recreated from a first printing of the Declaration of Independence called the "Lost Copy" which was discovered in 1968 in the 132 year old Leary's Book Store in Philadelphia The "Lost Copy" was purchased at auction by Dallas business executives Ira G. Corn, Jr., and Joseph P. Driscoll for $404,000 in 1970. The document was restored and then R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, The Lakeside Press, was commissioned to produce a small number of facsimiles in the early 1970's.The original broadside from which the facsimile was created was donated to the City of Dallas in 1978. As time passed the existence of these facsimiles was forgotten until what remained of them were discovered in a used book store still in the Donnelly wrapper. In a sense, then, history repeats and these facsimiles can be thought of as the "lost facsimiles".We are offering exclusively for sale on the web this exquisite facsimile of an original Dunlap Broadside. IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THERE WILL EVER BE ANOTHER RECREATION OR REPLICATION OF THE DUNLAP BROADSIDE THAT IS SO FAITHFUL TO THE ORIGINAL FOR REASONS DISCUSSED IN THE FULL LISTING.THE DUNLAP BROADSIDE CAN BE THOUGHT OF AS OUR NATION'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

The hoist (or bunting) is bound in heavy cloth and the field or ground of the flag is made of cotton cloth. The unique basketweave binding of the halyards on the hoist of the flag help top authenticate it.There are markings on the border of the flag including its metric size also consistent with flag markings of that era. Harry S Truman (1874-1972).Senator, Vice-president and 34th President of the United States. This is a TLS on US Senate stationery in which Truman responds to a letter asking him if he had changed his mind on the Supreme Court 'Question.' This letter was written just 10 days after ---"FDR sent his court-reform bill to Congress on February 5, 1937. In his accompanying message, Roosevelt stated that the judiciary should be reorganized "in order that it also may function in accord with modern necessities." FDR pointed out that the number of justices on the Supreme Court had been changed by Congress six previous times. The president argued that the federal courts were crowded with pending cases causing costly delays. He also addressed the issue of "aged or infirm judges" and the need for "younger blood."" As everyone knew then and knows now, FDR was having all of his New Deal schemes declared unconstitutional by the Supreme court and he wanted to pack the court with judges who would pass the New Deal programs. In Truman's letter he states that he has no opinion (sic) regarding FDR's proposal and that he wants more facts before deciding a matter, as HST put it, "That goes to the root of our government." A wonderful letter on a historic conflict between the Executive and Judicial branches and a letter that reflects Truman's character.

Ira Ecker letter signed

Ira Clarence Eaker(1896 -1987). Commander of 8th Air Force in WW II. His two page letter is full of important insights-some of which are eerily relevant to our situation today e.g. "In both World War I and II victory was assured by a united people who approved of the mission and supported the effort." He goes on to write about Vietnam as "our first lost war" and states,"The Vietnam War...was lost primarily because our President and the Congress did not term it a war and told our people that they could have 'butter and weapons' and make no united effort...the police action drug on for ten years and became unpopular in this country." Remember, this letter was written in 1980 so in his last major section of the letter Eaker offers a scathing assessment of Jimmy Carter's administration (not by name of course) and argues that the forced ignominious withdrawal from Cuba by the Russians made them commit to becoming the dominant world power militarily. Eaker argues that The United States had become a second rate power (in 1980) and that was what was determining foreign policy in world capitals. Of course, this was before the great one Ronaldo Maximus Reganus appeared on the American scene and before the Soviets eventually disappeared into the "dust bin of history." A two page letter that reviews our military history from WW I to 1980.Very rich in content and the letter is in pristine condition and is signed Ira Eaker, April, 1980.
