Maurice Wilkins (b.1916). New Zealand born, British biophysicist. Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine (1962). Remarkable Autograph Letter Signed. One page, large quarto, d. September 13, 1989, on "Kings College London (KQC) personal letterhead. Signed: "Maurice Wilkins". Reads in part: "… I am very interested in Charles Chaplin, one reason being that in Modern Times he used humour as a tool to criticize modern technology (which is of course science-based) in the world & its effect on human beings… science and humor are opposites in as much as science tries to get rid of the absurd, but to be a really original scientist I think one needs humor because it depends on flexibility of mind…. Neils Bohr said that some things are so serious that all one could do is make a joke… Similarly Einstein liked making `silly' jokes… And Alfred Nobel loved… pulling people’s legs… Nobel, Bohr & Einstein were all very deeply concerned with human problems such as war & peace…" Bohr, Einstein, and Wilkins were Manhattan Project alumni and were Nobel Laureates. Interesting philosophical content and scientific association with the greatest physicists of the twentieth century. In fine condition. Unframed. $old (#10184)
