- Thomas Wolfe, (1900-1938). Legendary American Author. Extraordinarily
Rare Typed Letter Signed, July 13th, 1935, New York City,
one page, quarto, to Mr. John R. Bickley, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Returning from Europe, Wolfe takes time to respond to a letter
of praise. Wolfe had gone to Paris that spring as his second
work, Of Time and the River, was published. The book was
well-received and a commericial success. Critics were comparing
him to Dickens, Joyce, and Proust. He spent four months abroad,
returning on July 4th, and was preparing to leave for a writer's
conference in Colorado when he took time to write this missive.
Even in its brevity this letter presents a fine example of Wolfe's
noted opulence, eloquence, and command of language. Reads in
part:
- "I want to thank
you very sincerely for your letter of March 25. The reason for
my delay in answering you is that I have just returned from Europe
and have had no mail for the last four months.
-
- I cannot anwser your fine
letter in the way it deserves to be anwsered ...but I do want
to tell you that any writer would be proud to know that something
he has written has meant as much to any reader...I shall do all
in my power in the future to justify and fulfill your belief
in my work.
- Yours sincerely,
- Thomas Wolfe"
