Magnificient letter by Tom Wolfe

Thomas Wolfe, (1900-1938). Legendary American Author. Extraordinarily Rare Typed Letter Signed, July 13th, 1935, New York City, one page, quarto, to Mr. John R. Bickley, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Returning from Europe, Wolfe takes time to respond to a letter of praise. Wolfe had gone to Paris that spring as his second work, Of Time and the River, was published. The book was well-received and a commericial success. Critics were comparing him to Dickens, Joyce, and Proust. He spent four months abroad, returning on July 4th, and was preparing to leave for a writer's conference in Colorado when he took time to write this missive. Even in its brevity this letter presents a fine example of Wolfe's noted opulence, eloquence, and command of language. Reads in part:
"I want to thank you very sincerely for your letter of March 25. The reason for my delay in answering you is that I have just returned from Europe and have had no mail for the last four months.

I cannot anwser your fine letter in the way it deserves to be anwsered ...but I do want to tell you that any writer would be proud to know that something he has written has meant as much to any reader...I shall do all in my power in the future to justify and fulfill your belief in my work.
            Yours sincerely,
            Thomas Wolfe"

Thomas Wolfe was one of the great writers and towering figures of twentieth century literature. His unique literary style— a mix of highly original, poetic, rhapsodical, and impressive prose—has elevated his life to legendary status through his four autobiographical novels. His first novel, Look Homeward, Angel was published in 1929, only nine years before his death. It is considerd one of the great works of American literature ever produced. His second novel, Of Time and the River, was published in 1935. This was followed by a collection of short stories, From Death to Morning, published that same year. An autobiographical essay on writing, The Story of a Novel, was published in 1936. These books, along with many short stories published in magazines, completes the works that appeared during his lifetime. There were three posthumous works—The Web and the Rock, You Can't Go Home Again, and The Hills Beyond—that were gleaned from the huge manuscript works that Wolfe left behind.

Letters from Wolfe are very rare and seldom come to the market. He died tragically two weeks shy of his thirty-eighth birthday from complications with pneumonia and tuberculosis of the brain.

The letter shows normal folds, aging. Overall, fine. Housed in a custom.

The autograph comes with a letter of authenticity as to its origin, history and authenticity.
